Airbags fitted with NADI 5-AT propellant are being urgently recalled to prevent potential injury or even death.
If your car was manufactured between 1996 and 2001, you should urgently check the below Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) list to see if your car has been recalled.
The recall is due to faulty airbags which may allow moisture to enter the unit due to inadequate sealing tape and degrade the airbag propellant, NADI 5-AT. If deployed, the airbag could injure or kill the driver or passengers by misdeploying in an accident and propelling parts or metal fragments into the cabin of the vehicle at high speed.
There is also a potential risk that some of the airbags may underinflate in a collision and may not protect the driver as intended.
There are around 85,000 vehicles affected across car brands including Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki and Toyota.
These airbags were manufactured between May 1995 and August 1999 and are captured under voluntary recalls that are being monitored by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.
Takata NADI 5-AT airbags are different to those captured under the existing compulsory recall of Takata PSAN airbags, which is monitored by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
