What are the defects?

Due to a manufacturing defect, moisture may be able to enter the starter motor causing corrosion and result in the engine not starting. Additionally, this may cause a short circuit while the vehicle is in operation or parked, potentially leading to a vehicle fire.

What are the hazards?

A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders and/or damage to property

What should consumers do?

Vehicles should be parked outdoors away from structures and other vehicles until the starter motor has been replaced.

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted in writing by BMW requesting to schedule an appointment immediately with their preferred authorised BMW dealer to replace the starter motor, free of charge.
