What are the defects?

Due to a software issue, under certain driving conditions the electric power steering system may become temporarily inoperable. Should this occur, steering will remain functional. However, the driver may experience a noticeable increase in steering effort, particularly when cornering.

Additionally, if the driver does not have their hands on the steering wheel for an extended period, the brake jolt triggered by the Emergency Assist (EA) or Travel Assist (TA) assistance functions meant to alert the driver occurs it may misinterpreted as the driver braking. As a result, the Emergency Assist (EA) or Travel Assist (TA) assistance functions are deactivated.

Note: The instrument cluster may fail to illuminate the visual and audible warnings that the safety functions are deactivated.

What are the hazards?

A sudden increase in steering effort and/or a loss of safety functions could increase the risk of an accident-causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.

What should consumers do?

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Volkswagen and are asked to arrange with their nearest authorised Volkswagen dealer to have the software updated, free of charge.
